When I saw him sitting with some friends watching the band rehearse, I didn't know that he did not read. After the band read down a chart with a rehearsal drummer, Buddy would get on the drums and play the chart by memory. Flawless and played like he had been playing that chart his whole life. I didn't find out till later that he didn't read. He'd listen to a chart ONE time and knew it by heart. Never forgot that. Amazing. And these were hard difficult charts. Amazing.... - Now this is fantastic music! Buddy Rich and his big band, with Mel Torme. Mel does a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. So much talent on one stage, including the amazing Steve Marcus on sax. Buddy and his band play the classic "Birdland". Heck, even Redd Foxx sings a tune with Buddy's band. This was an old-school variety show with an appearance by the king of one-liners, Henny Youngman.
